Quick Guide to the Wisconsin Court

Wisconsin Background

The Wisconsin court system is divided into four levels. The highest of the Wisconsin Courts is the Wisconsin Supreme Court. The next level of the Wisconsin court system is the Wisconsin Court of Appeals, followed by the Wisconsin Circuit Court System, with the Municipal Courts serving as the lowest level of Wisconsin courts.

Wisconsin Court Access

Wisconsin Circuit Court Access is a program which the Wisconsin courts have adopted in order to make Wisconsin court access more widely available to the public. This program was adopted in order to make it possible for the Wisconsin courts to adhere to the Wisconsin law which called for public records to be accessible to the public. As a result, a Wisconsin Circuit Court Access simple case search can be conducted by visiting the State court website.

Wisconsin Court Records

Wisconsin court records are made available to the public through the WI Court Access Program. This developed as the WI Court system sought to follow the regulations laid out in sections 19.31 through 19.39 of the Wisconsin Statutes.

Wisconsin Circuit Courts

Wisconsin circuit courts have developed to handle cases involving contract law, personal injury law, family law, juvenile delinquency law, laws affecting children that find themselves in need of protection or services, small claims, traffic violations, disputes between tenants and landlords, and criminal law. The Wisconsin Court System assigns jurisdiction to a WI Circuit Court on the basis of personal jurisdiction or subject matter jurisdiction.
